Retrofit: Transforming underutilised 1980s office building into contemporary open-plan workspace, appealing to a wide demographic demand
Key design challenge was reconciling depth of building with need for natural light: use of colonnades + arcades to dissect space rather than corridors allows offices to benefit from natural daylight + maintain vistas
Energy efficient light sensors throughout
Architectural ethos of 'designed to last': material palette leans heavily on natural oak woods that develop a patina with time rather than needing to be replaced
𼌠Wellbeing
16 accessible outdoor terraces offering panoramic London views
Fully equipped gym with classes + PT sessions available
Private phone booths throughout: for quiet, focused work or undisturbed calls
Variety of social spaces foster community + connectivity: everyone has access to front half of the building with cafĂŠ, large reception + residency space
đBonus feature
On the architects' inspiration: âWe studied the architecture of the Knowledge Quarter buildings to inform our design. We wanted the design to reference an institution, without being institutional. One of the hero points was the traditional reading room. To echo this, we created a hidden co-working lounge â a space that cannot be seen from the outside â its hidden nature lends the feeling it's privilege to be thereâ.
