🟩 GreenBricks Building of the Week 🟩 Triodos Bank

Remountable green

Nestled in Dutch woodland, this workspace for ethical planet-first bank Triodos, lets nature take lead. The first large-scale 100% wooden, remountable office building – made from 165,315 screws – it’s basically a grand Lego set.

📍Location

🌱Sustainability

  • BREEAM Outstanding + energy-positive (thanks to solar roof generation)

  • Innovative reversible timer frame: all components joined using 165,312 screws = it can be completely disassembled + reused in circular economy

  • Design stage included comprehensive local ecology study = final result sympathetically blends into surrounding habitat; max height 25m so as to not tower above trees

  • Installation of seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) – groundwater used to cool building in summer + heat premises in winter

  • Special light plan prevents bats and birds getting disorientated at dusk; drinking pools for deer and amphibians

🥦 Wellbeing

  • Glass walls maximise daylight whilst framing views to surrounding forest in 3 “landscape rooms”

  • Interior design promotes inspiration + interaction: large open plan spaces, central spiral staircase, ground floor restaurant

  • Quiet spaces located throughout with concentration pods + phone booths

  • Ventilation guided by CO2 sensors continuously measuring + optimising indoor air quality

🎈Bonus feature

The office is conceived as a materials bank – with all its material values monitored using the Madaster platform. This digital library of materials gives building components an identity so that they can be resold and reused in the future. Buildings become a reservoir of resources.
